What it actually is
Cupping is the one treatment that works in the opposite direction to massage. Instead of compressing tissue downward, the cups create negative pressure and draw skin and fascia up and away from the muscle underneath. That decompression is what makes space in tissue that has been stuck together.
Two approaches get used here. Static cups sit in place over a specific area of held tension. Glide cupping moves the cups slowly across oiled skin, which covers more ground and feels closer to a deep massage. Which one you get is decided by what your back and shoulders are actually doing that day.
The circular marks are normal. They are not bruises in the way a knock is — they are a drawing of stagnant blood toward the surface, and they fade over three to seven days.
Who it’s for
- Your shoulders and neck hold everything, and massage helps for about a day
- You sit or drive for long stretches and your lower back has opinions about it
- You train, and recovery is the part you keep skipping
- You’re already having sculpting and want the fascia work to go further
What happens in the room
Read the tissue
A few minutes by hand to find what is actually tight, which is often not where it hurts.
Place the cups
Static over held areas, glide across broader ones. Suction is adjusted to what you can breathe through comfortably.
Sit with it
Cups stay for a few minutes at a time. It should feel like a strong pull, never a pinch.
Release and settle
Manual work over the treated area so nothing is left abrupt.
What it will not do
Cupping is not a diagnosis and it will not fix a structural problem. If something is sharp, radiating, or getting worse week over week, you need a doctor or a physical therapist first — and that is what you will be told.
Afterwards
- Expect circular marks and plan around anything strapless for the week
- Water, and more of it than feels necessary
- No sauna, hot tub or hot yoga for 24 hours
- Keep the marked area out of direct sun while it fades
Questions about cupping therapy
Do the marks hurt?
They look far worse than they feel. Most people report the area feels looser and slightly tender, similar to the day after a good workout.
How long do the marks last?
Usually three to seven days. Darker marks generally mean more stagnation in that area, and they tend to get lighter the more regularly you come.
Can I combine cupping with body sculpting?
Yes, and they work well together — cupping opens the fascia and sculpting moves the fluid. The order and spacing get planned at The Discovery.
What if I bruise easily or take blood thinners?
Tell us at The Discovery. Blood thinners, certain skin conditions and pregnancy all change what is appropriate, and in some cases cupping will not be recommended at all.
